A note from the GM

Summer is gradually arriving – the course is in fine condition and we look forward to a dry June.   Please note that 2 June we are holding the rescheduled Team Competition which was postponed from Easter – it is a shotgun start and the course will be closed to non-competitors until around 12.45.

Congratulations to all the recent winners of our club competitions. The Ladies Millennium Trophy was won by Carol Isaac and the Spring Meeting by Carole Weir (Hale Cup) and Jackie Barton (Young Bowl). The Men’s Beaconsfield Bowl was won by Richard Lewis with a nett 65.     We have had two very successful and enjoyable Invitation Days – the Men’s Invitation last Saturday was well supported with Phil Kilgour and his guest Will Birch coming out on top with an amazing 44 points.

The Seniors Invitation held earlier in May was won by Peter Button and Mike Shilling, pictured below.

The Mixed Invitation is on 22 July and, being the final day of The Open Championship, it will be a morning competition with a shotgun start at 9 am.

A reminder to all members that the swing studio is available to hire either for practice or to play (individually or in groups) one of the pre-programmed courses – please ask at the Pro shop for details.

Rules Quiz:

Last month I posed the following: ‘In a match Alan played his second from the trees onto the green.   His opponent Ben, who took 3 to get out of a bunker, concedes the hole.  It is then discovered that Alan’s ball on the green was not his original and he had played a wrong ball.   Does Ben’s concession stand?’

Congratulations to Sue Schmidt whose name was drawn from quite a few correct answers.   The concession does not stand as once Alan had played the wrong ball he has lost the hole.

You are given a break for this month!

The greens are running fast and true at a cutting height of 3mm. The 50 tonnes of sand applied during the spring renovations followed by 3 (2 weekly) applications of 10 tonnes has left the newly drained PCD greens close to recovery. There are still some visible lines which are being over seeded weekly and are filling slowly but surely. Now the sand levels within the surface are good the top dressing will be reduced in volume (reduced from 10 to 6-7 tonnes per application) and frequency being reduced from fortnightly to every 3 weeks.

Other than the day to day cutting and set up of the course, the team’s main focus over the next 4 week will be to concentrate on sand levels in all of the bunkers. Many will be topped with new sand, approximately 1-2 tonnes per bunker and others will be renovated with the correct volume of sand redistributed throughout the base.

A reminder that I will be doing a presentation in the Clubhouse on progress made over the last 5 years and plans and priorities for the course going forward.   This will take place at 6 pm on Tuesday 3 July and we hope many members will attend – plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

County Cards

The Club will not be purchasing County Cards this year.   This is as a result of the minimal take up over the past couple of years with well over 500 unused.    Members can of course still apply directly to the County to get a Card.  (Cost £15).

For any help please contact the Office.

Clubhouse Renovations

We are replacing the carpets in the bar and members lounge later this month. There will be minimal disruption with most of the work carried out in the evenings (12/13 June).   The only date the main bar area will be ‘out of bounds’ is Monday 18 June.
