From The Captain |
Please sit yourself down with a coffee as March has brought a lot of activity with the new golfing year, clocks going forward, plans to move ahead with refurbishing the clubhouse, a new season, and The Masters just around the corner now. Also some lovely warm English weather… unfortunately for us on Andrew Barton’s ‘Portugeezers Tour’ as whilst we were playing in wind and rain in the Algarve it was 22° in the UK!
Still, we managed to enjoy it despite our leader injuring his leg on the airport run by cleverly walking into a tow bar! His leg looked like amputation might be needed but a wheelchair and Derry Brien the ‘headless golfer’ were there to ensure he made it onto the plane.
On March 8 we once again did battle with the Artisans for the Lidgley Shield and despite a great 2-0 start, only managed a 3-3 half so they retained it once again. Amusingly but maybe strategically poor, they had seen my ‘Bandits’ comment in the Feb Niblick (I didn’t know they read it!) so turned out a very strongly moustachioed team. DGJ, be aware for next year! To their Captain, Simon Peach – well played senor!
Then we had the Seniors Spring Meeting with nearly 80 entrants and Peter McKelvey kindly let me run another ‘Pink Quiz’ raising nearly £400 for my charity (thanks all) and the pink champagne was won by Paul Renucci. This was followed by a brief update and a lively Q&A by myself supported by the President but I’m still here so it can’t have been too bad!
100 Holes Big Charitee Off – Achieved so far c.£60,000 if we can sell all the Auction items.
This is really gathering pace and a big thankyou to the many members and friends who have donated, given prizes (we still need more) for the Silent Auction here, and offered to help or caddy. Also to James Ellis at Active Healthcare who as well as participating, has agreed to bring his physiotherapy team on the day to repair broken golfers!
The just Giving site is here and we’ll put framed QR Codes on the bar soon so you can donate by just pointing your camera at it and clicking through to the link – simples!
Huge thanks to Andrew Barton whose sterling work has meant we only need 7 more tee sponsors and a big shout-out to the following members/companies who have helped us already:
Mike Lawson - Home Instead Brian Barton - Turquoise Travel
Nick Kebbel - Kebbell Homes Des Naughton - Belter
Toureen Rochfords
Careys Savills
Porsche High Wycombe Bovingdons
Tripps Removals
Captain and Pro Challenge - 2025
Following our Spring warm weather prep in Portugal, Chris Dodds and I are once again challenging you all to take us on - we will publish some dates shortly and look forward to some healthy competition - full barracking rights allowed.
Competition Tee Times
So I can meet as many of the members as possible, I have booked a 9am slot in every competition until Oct 12. If you’d like to play with me (or maybe just get a 9am slot..!) pls email or WhatsApp me and we’ll get you slotted in. There will be a small admin fee of a £10 donation to Breast Cancer Now.
Happy Golfing,

From the Ladies Captain |
March began with our Charity Bridge Event. 84 Ladies and Gentlemen took part and had an enjoyable afternoon of bridge, tea and cake. We raised over £1100 for Medecins Sans Frontiers.
Again on the social front Steve McAdam and his team gave us a brain stimulating evening in his 16th year of organising the Quiz. The quiz was won by Pete Muir’s team with 208 points closely followed by Joan Murphy’s team with 200. A huge thank you to Steve and his team of helpers for raising £1510.00 for the 2 charities we support.
About 30 Beaconsfield supporters were treated to a wonderful display of golf at the Sunningdale Foursomes when Ella and Dan Buttriss took on Georgia Hall and Charlie Hull. Ella and Dan lost on the 18th but they gave them a great match. There are some lovely photos on the notice board in the bar.
The Winter League matches ended on a high with a 2/1 win over Harleyford in their last match. Beaconsfield finished 4th in the League.
The County lunch at Denham golf club was well represented by Beaconsfield. 11 of us thoroughly enjoyed a delicious lunch and a talk about the County Charity, Heart of Bucks.

News From The Junior And Younger Members |
Spring is in the air and it’s wonderful to have so much golf to look forward to over the coming months.
Focusing on April, we have 3 JOOM competitions on 14th, 19th and 27th April. Please sign up on line.
The Team Championships are being held on 18th April and it is such a fun and friendly, albeit competitive day ! It is a shotgun start at 8.15am followed by lunch and each team have 9 representatives, with the best 5 scores to count. The Juniors are usually very competitive and we would be delighted to see the Juniors win this year. Please sign up online.
The BB&O are running a Junior Girls Championship event at Beaconsfield on 14th April and we would like as many Junior girls as possible to sign up and compete in this event. Please contact Ruth Lambert for more information.
Starting this month, we will be starting a new initiative of a Buddy system. This is for some of our older and more experienced Junior members to be ‘buddied up’ with some of our less experienced Juniors to help and encourage them and to be an additional point of contact, either to play in competitions together or to have a fellow member to come to the club and practice with and to get additional guidance. Please get in touch with a member of the Junior Committee if you have any questions or would like to be involved in this new initiative.
The coaching schedule has now been published, so please look out for these dates. They are running from April to September. There will be a maximum of 8 Juniors per session, so please make sure you sign up ahead of the sessions to confirm your place. These sessions are free of charge.
Happy golfing and we look forward to seeing you at the golf club over the coming days and months.
Ingrid Creighton and The Junior Committee
Mixed Golf |
The selections have now been made for all mixed matches except Denham away. Thank you to everyone who applied to play with nearly every match well over subscribed. The Denham match has been rearranged to June 8 and we are short of players so please sign up on line if you wish to play - this includes individual men as there are a number of ladies who wish to play in this match who do not have a partner. Similarly we are looking for an individual man to pair up with a lady for the home match against Northwood on August 17.
Our first match away at Berkhamsted was a difficult start to the season with a defeat by 6.5 to 1.5. Never easy to play away from home but many thanks to the everyone who played in the team. Next match is Lambourne at home on Sunday April 6.
Easter is nearly upon us. Good luck to the mixed team in the Team Championship on Good Friday. The Easter Monday SSAFA mixed competition has just one free slot available.
Entry for the first Supper Greensomes on May 2nd opens on April 5 and for the Bank Holiday Competition on May 5th which opens on April 7. Planning continues for the Mixed Invitation on August 23, more details to follow in due course.

Course Update and Rainfall |
The improving weather signals the arrival of spring, bringing our winter projects to a close. We have successfully constructed new steps at the back of the 7th green and the 17th pit. Additionally, we have levelled and drained both the approach to the putting green and the 4th approach.
The copse of trees at the back of the 11th tees, which is approximately 15 years old, has been managed to remove the weaker specimens. It is standard practice to plant three times the number of final trees required, with a third dying off and a third removed. The team made good progress clearing scrub from the left side of the 8th hole, from the green down to the 150 post. The cleared area will be overseeded with a woodland fescue seed mix to encourage grass encroachment. Work on the 8th will recommence in the autumn.
The practice nets at the end of the car park are complete and open for play. Our final project will be the installation of a new shoe cleaner and a revamp of this area, with work set to begin on the 7th April.
The removal of the post and ropes signals the start of the cutting season, with the heights of cut reducing over the coming weeks. The first fairway divot is scheduled for the beginning of April. The irrigation system has come through the winter well, requiring some minor repairs, and has been primed up and is ready for use. The team will service every irrigation head in the coming weeks, with a number needing updates or levelling.

In the Bag...Rakes in Bunkers |
Where to place the Rake
After use, rakes should be placed on the outer edge of the bunker. The head should rest on a flat base area while the handle is on the grass. This practice helps minimise the risk of unfavourable lies and keeps the rake handle dry, making it easier to pick up.
What you should do if your ball finishes against a rake
There is no penalty if the ball moves when you move the rake, but you must replace the ball where it was – if you don’t, you get a two-shot penalty.
If the ball will not stay where it was, and given that it is on a slope, this is quite likely, you must replace it in the nearest place in the bunker where it will stay, no nearer the hole.
If you cannot find anywhere in the bunker, no nearer the hole, where the ball will stay. In this case, your only option is to declare the ball unplayable, and you have two options:
Stroke and distance – Under a one-shot penalty, go back to where you last played, so if your 2nd shot was in the bunker, you are now playing your 4th shot from back down the hole.
Back on the line outside the bunker – under a two-shot penalty, drop the ball outside the bunker on a line keeping the point where the ball was in the bunker between you and the hole. So, if your 2nd shot was in the bunker, you are now playing your 5th shot from the rough to the left of the bunker.
Please consider other players when replacing rakes.
