In the Golf Bag......New Rules of Golf 2019

It’s not long until the New Rules of Golf come into force (January 1st).  The rules have been completely rewritten to make them more easily understood and more consistent.

The new ‘Players Edition of the Rules of Golf’ is much easier to read than the old rules book and even has pictures to help with the explanations.  Chris has copies of the book in the Pro Shop, so please pick one up and keep it in your bag.

There is also an App available for both Android and iPhone, which has lots of new facilities, including a visual search and rules quizzes.  If you download the App you can use this instead of the book to check any rules while you are on the course.

There is now a page for the 2019 Rules of Golf on the BGC web site, with links to videos and other information, so please keep checking this page as we will add more information as it becomes available.

We also have another New Rules Evening on the 9th January starting at 6.30pm. We are extremely fortunate to have two experts running the evening for us. Janet Beal, will take you through the major rule changes and Andy McFee, Chief Referee of the European Tour, who was involved in the formulation of the new rules, will illustrate the changes with examples from the various professional tours. The first two sessions held earlier this month were extremely well received so please come along and take advantage of the chance to be clued up and ready for the new season.

Course

Greens

The greens are currently being cut twice a week at 5mm with the pedestrian hand mowers with a roll from the turf iron once per week. Dew dispersants are being sprayed every 2 weeks to keep the greens dry. The 2 hole cup system is in operation with the pin being moved daily to spread the wear during hard frosts when we’re unable to change the hole.

Please remember to –

Tap frost from your shoes before walking onto the green as any frost/debris left around the pin can freeze hard to the green which the greenstaff are unable to move until it thaws.
Repair yours and any other pitch marks you see as recovery will be slow.
Wherever possible choose to walk alternative routes around greens, tees and bunkers. Help us to spread the traffic, avoid walking tight ‘racing’ lines and if the ground looks particularly wet/muddy help us to help you by walking around it.

Course

The majority of the leaves are now down so the team will concentrate on final cleans ups on the run up to Christmas, hand blowing banks and mulching where possible.

Regular sanding of high traffic areas will continue with the use of directional posts to help keep the course as clean as possible during the winter.

We have renovated 13 bunkers so far and will take a short 2 week break as we concentrate on leaves then we will resume this work in the New Year.

The Tina Turner Tribute Night in November was a huge success.

All of the Festive Season events were very popular and well received.

Unfortunately, the Turkey Trot was cancelled due to the course being closed, but it has been rescheduled for Saturday January 5th, when a full field will once again be playing.

The Children’s Christmas Party was the busiest for some years and my thanks go out to our “Father Christmas”, Alec Mitchell and my hard working Social Committee of Sue Goodliffe and Sue Overall.

The ever popular Quiz Night is to be held on Saturday, 16th February.

This event will sell out within days of the email going to members on January 7th.

On behalf of all of the bar and catering staff, I would like to wish members a Joyous Christmas and Happy New Year.

David Jennings

Christmas Lunches

The last two Sundays have seen many members enjoy some wonderful traditional Christmas Lunches at the club together with some very enthusiastic carol singing. Our thanks go to David Jennings and all the catering and bar staff for their efforts which were much appreciated by everyone. A big thank you also to our pianists, Judy Gill and Gill Thomas.

News From The Junior Section

This has been another great year for the juniors with many highlights and individual achievements.

At our Junior Annual meeting on Sunday 4th November, our Club Captain Roger Clarke and our Ladies' Captain Helen Morris, presented the many trophies to all the prize-winners. This was a very special afternoon, during which our outgoing Junior Captain James Butler, reflected on his very successful year and then he introduced the new Junior Captain Ben Quick. James Casserly was announced as Junior Vice Captain, so they will work together in leading our juniors next season. Congratulations to them both and we wish them every success for 2019. After the meeting, we all witnessed a fantastic drive by Ben (283yds) straight down the middle! The video of Ben's drive-in can be seen on the Junior webpage.

The last two matches of the year, against the County Girls and our 1st Team, were both 'drawn', which considering the opposition were very good results. The match against the Seniors scheduled for the October half-term, had to be cancelled due to the number of juniors away on school trips. We have agreed to schedule this annual match during the school summer holidays in future.

CHILTERN LEAGUE

The final triumph for our Junior Team was at Woburn Sands & Aspley Guise GC, when they won The Bert Yates Trophy 🏆 on Friday 26th October. This is an annual Inter-League event run by the BB&O, for the winners of every League within their area. At the end of the season, we ended up at the top of the Chiltern League, on equal match points with Gerrards Cross, so our representative Team included 4 of our boys (James Casserly, Bradley Hucker, George Johnson and Tom Bell) plus 2 girls from Gerrards Cross. The format was individual stableford with 5 out of 6 scores to count for the Team total. It was a bitterly cold day and very windy, but our Team won, well ahead of the other clubs with an average score of 35pts. Well done and what a great way to end the season!

2018 JUNIOR EUROPEAN OPEN

Congratulations to George Johnson, who qualified to play in the 2018 Junior European Open Final, which was held at Alcaidesa Golf Club in Spain, between 23rd November to 1st December. 86 juniors made the final and played four scratch rounds on two courses, with their two best scores counting towards the cut. George made the cut easily and after the fifth and final round, ended up in 16th position, which was a remarkable achievement! The full leaderboard and information about the tournament can be viewed on the following link: https://www.golforganiser.com/2018-tournament

NEW RULES OF GOLF

With the new rules coming into effect on 1st January 2019, Andy McFee and Janet Beal have recently been holding presentations for our members. Andy and Janet have kindly agreed, to give our junior members a special demonstration of these new rules, which will take place on Saturday 12th January. An email will be sent to all our junior members in the next few days, with further details.

GET INTO GOLF FOR GIRLS

Following the success of last year, we are currently organising another 'Fun Session' for Spring 2019. Our aim is to encourage more young girls to learn to play golf, so it will be an opportunity for members with young daughters or granddaughters, to bring them along to the club and 'have a go' at golf. Once the date has been confirmed, the members will be emailed with the full details.

It will soon be Christmas, so warmest wishes to all our juniors and their families. Have fun over the holiday and then you can look forward to some great golf in 2019.

Happy Christmas to All  🎄
