BGC Board Nominations
At the AGM in October we will be appointing four new members of the board. The following will be proposed and seconded by current Board members:
|Having played since he was 16, Roger still enjoys a handicap of 12, having been in single figures for many years. He has played over 400 courses in the UK and knows the golf world well. He was a very popular Captain of the Wildebeests for many years. Roger had a long career at British Gas where he rose to be Personnel Controller at British Gas HQ. He then moved into line management and ran the UK Gas Emergency Service which handled over 7 million telephone calls each year, dealing with both small domestic issues and national disasters. He is a family man and, courtesy of a daughter’s successful horse-riding, still acts as the unpaid groom for his (now reduced) stables. Roger is both charming and extremely competent.|
|Vice CaptainSteve Lynch||Now retired, Steve spent 33 years with the NHS, the last 20 at Finance Director level for London Health Authorities. His main sport has been cricket where he captained Beaconsfield Cricket Club for 12 years and played for England over 60ies. He was Chairman of Beaconsfield Cricket Club for 4 years. Steve has been a member of the golf club since 1984 and was on the board (2013-2016) where he was Chairman of House. He is currently Captain of the Wildebeests. His wife, son, son-in-law and eldest grand-daughter are all members of the club. He enjoys competitive bridge. His golf handicap is 12.|
|Grant is a graduate of Auckland University and a member of the New Zealand Society of Accountants. He recently retired from Herbalife where he was responsible for tax and treasury in the EMEA region. He is treasurer of two local charities, Scannappeal and High Wycombe Citizens Advice. Grant is the Captain of the Club Team. He has lived in Gerrards Cross for 20 years and has been a member of the club since 2009. His handicap is 10.|
|Gareth spent ten years of his life in the Greenkeeping industry in America, Australia and the UK, working at some famous courses. Over the last 4 years he has run his own property maintenance and gardening company. He joined the club as a junior in 1994 and has twice been Captain of the First Team, in 2005/6 and 2017/18. His mother Sue and brother Lloyd are both members of the club, which has seen many fierce battles on the golf course. Gareth is married with two young children who are sometimes seen at the club at weekends. Gareth benefitted from the strong junior section back in the nineties, and now serves on our committee for Junior and young golfers. If elected at the AGM, Gareth will serve on the Green Committee, where his experience and skills will help to maintain the high standards we have seen in recent years. His handicap is 4.|
A note from the GM
The recent President’s Cup was once again a most enjoyable and successful occasion – the sun shone, the course was in superb condition and the scoring impressive. The result was extremely close with David Booker triumphant after a countback following a tremendous nett 66 in the afternoon round. He put it down to the President’s beer!
We are very much aware that this year the event was over-subscribed and entries filled very quickly. Despite the usual number of drop-outs there were still a several members who could not get in and as such the Golf & Competitions Committee will be looking at the format and playing matrix to see whether there is scope for including greater numbers.
A note from the GM continued........
We have commenced some tree pruning this week on the course and this will continue for a few days whilst contractors remove limbs and branches damaged during the snow earlier in the year. There is little disruption but please remain vigilant when playing holes where men are working at height. We shall be starting work on the new 4th tees next week and play for the next few months will be from the existing forward tees – again there should be little disruption.
The recent Luke Donald Salver was played on 22 August and we were blessed with a very strong field and good weather. It is fantastic to report that the event was won by Daisy Kennedy who, although playing out of Stoke Park, is also a member here. She also won the Bucks Cup which is a combined 72 hole event including 36 holes at Stoke Park. Her handicap is now +1.4!
Members will have noted there is now an electric gate installed in front of the Greenkeepers’ compound – this was essential to increase security and in the light of a number of recent break-ins and thefts both here and at other courses. Should any member need or wish to park in the Artisans car park they can obtain a code from the office.
We now Tweet!
For any members who use twitter you can now follow us:
You may have noticed there is also a twitter feed on the home page for those who don't.
Our aim is to give members an insite to what our greenkeeping team do out on the course, and help keep you informed from the course perspective, rather than the office!
The final Supper Greensomes for 2018 was held on Friday 7th September. Several couples were in the running to win the league, which is for the best 4 scores over the 8 competitions. Simon and Jenny Mouncer came through on the final event to take a narrow victory from Chris and Jan Collis.
Thanks to everyone who came along and played over the summer with 47 different pairs playing, we hope everyone enjoyed their golf and especially the supper afterwards. Thanks to Stuart and his team for giving us a fabulous course all summer and to David and his team for looking after us in the evenings.
For 2019 the first Supper Greensomes will be on Friday 3rd May, and then every other Friday until Friday 6th September – an increase from 8 to 10 competitions.
Many thanks for all of your support and we look forward to next year’s competitions and suppers.
Janet & Tony
