From the captain

I write this as I enter the last couple of weeks of my Captaincy, a year that has flown by quicker than I expected.

The support from members has been terrific which has added to the enjoyment. I am grateful to our President Simon Dodd and Vice-Captain Dave Booker for their support over the last 12 months and would like to wish Dave all the best as our new Captain for the coming year. I would also like say how much I have enjoyed working alongside the Ladies Captain Sue Goodliffe in our joint fundraising for our charity Carers Bucks for which we have raised £10,540.00.

It’s been a year of change at the club with Stuart becoming our new General Manager, Lee taking over control of the course, Katie moving on to pastures new and Elaine being promoted to Club Operations Manager. Stuart is hugely ambitious for our club, has a proven record of delivering projects and I’m confident he will make his mark on this club for many years to come.

I was playing golf at Alwoodley and Moortown last week so missed the biblical downpour on Thursday. I understand we broke the historical monthly rain record…..in just 5 days! As sign of things to come.

Working for our Lunch

The first Sunday Carvery started last week and, unexpectantly, Dave Booker and I had to work hard for our lunch. When Martin Smith kindly offered us an after-lunch mint, we didn’t realise that ‘payback’ would be immediate! Dave and I were delighted to assist him to change his punctured tyre. We were a touch off F1 pit stop pace but I’m sure with practice…….

The Presidents Cup

The final ‘Major’ of the year turned into a rout, with Ian Griffiths teaching us all how to play. His magnificent gross 70 in the morning, set up his day, but the follow-up gross 72 was just as vital to give Ian a nett -12 total, a full 6 shots ahead of Kris Merritt in 2nd place.

It has been one of the honours of my life to be Captain of our outstanding golf club and I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the Captain’s Dinner on Saturday 5th October and the AGM on 12th October.

From the Ladies Captain

As I sit down to write my last piece for the Niblick, I can’t believe how quickly the past year has gone.   I would like to say a huge thank you to the many people who have made my year as Ladies’ Captain such a pleasure. Starting with my Committee, Ros, my Vice Captain, who has supported me and helped throughout the year, Gill, our fantastic Ladies Secretary, Carole, our Handicap Secretary and organiser of our Bucks Shield squad, helped by Sue Mears, who will take over from her next year. Ruth, our County Rep, Lynda, who has kept the Ladies Section of the website up to date and photographed all the big occasions, not forgetting Sally and Maureen who have helped in many ways. There are so many other people to thank, including all the staff for their support over the past year, and many members who volunteer so much of their time to make this such a wonderful ladies section. It has been a privilege to serve as Ladies’ Captain.

Amelie Jones, Emily Gilmour, Thilanya Rajapaksha and Ella Butteriss were part of a nine strong Bucks team who went to Devon for the National Finals. Unfortunately, they were not successful this time, finishing fifth out of the six finalists. It was a very young squad, with many playing at this level for the first time and the experience will serve to equip them well for future competitions. They have all done well individually this year and are all in the top seven of the BB&O order of merit.

During the Summer, Beaconsfield Silver Scratch team have played against Burnham Beeches, Denham, Gerrards Cross and Woburn. The team finished in 3rd place with 11 points, so they retain their place in the Premier League, which was won by Woburn. A big thanks to the players that represented BGC – Ella Butteriss, Irene Brien, Helen Morris, Christine Tyler, Christine Watson, Carole Weir and Lorraine Whillans. Last but not lease Di Bovey, team Captain.

The Ladies were entertained by the Artisans on 20th September for the away leg of the Ladies and Artisans Greensomes competition. The winners were Carol Isaac and Andy Prickett with 42 points.

The Bronze Scratch team had a slow start to the season with zero points for their first match. However, finishing on a high, for the season by winning against the overall winners of the group, meant that Beaconsfield remains in the second division, and with the enthusiasm for match play, created this year in the Bucks Shield squad, hopefully we will return to division one next season.

It just remains for me to wish Ros Johnstone a successful (and hopefully drier) year as she takes over as our new Ladies Captain, ably assisted by Dawn Muir, her Vice Captain.

News From The Junior And Younger Members

As the nights begin to draw in the activity in the junior sections starts to slow down after a busy year, which is a convenient time to welcome our new committee member Roddy Conway on board and allow him time to find his feet.

This month kicked off with a fun Adult / Junior event allowing the juniors to invite non BGC members to come along and take part, this turned out to be an extremely enjoyable competition and was won by Stanley and Stuart Finn with an impressive 47 points, piping  William and Nicholas Leale by a single point.

This set the juniors up nicely for their Chiltern League match and local derby against Hazelmere. The team comprising of Aziz and Faeez Chaudhary, Christian Cotter, Alex Zhang and William Leale came out with a fine 3-2 win. The months events were finalised as I write with a Stableford competition won by Alex Zhang with 39 points, it won’t be long before that young man is shooting lower than his dad, if he’s not already!

Generally, its been a hectic year for the committee with Dianne Regan stepping down and the young and effervescent Ingrid Creighton stepping in to fill Di’s shoes and doing a great job of it too. Tom has continued his coaching sessions which are open to all the juniors and we would strongly encourage anyone within the section to take a spot and get their game improved. Tom is super enthusiastic, an excellent coach and always makes the sessions a lot of fun, plus you get to meet new people and they are free, what more could you want.

With regular committee meetings, we are amongst many other things, able to keep track on who is playing and who isn’t and our aim in the next 12 months is to encourage all those who don’t seem to be playing as much to do so, after all the purpose of being in the section is to come up and play golf.

To that end if you have any suggestions on how we can achieve this and improve the numbers we would like to hear from you and be very happy to consider.

On that note, please put the date of the Junior AGM and prize giving in your diaries for the 3rd November at 14:30, we want to see as many of you as possible attend and make it a full house. If you plan to come up why not play a few holes beforehand?

In the meantime, keep swinging.

Ian Boardman and the Junior Committee

Course Update and Rainfall

As we head into Autumn, the height of cut on the greens has been raised from 3 to 4 mm as the wet weather returns and the days become shorter. The putting surfaces will be granular fertilized to strengthen the grass plant as this time of year is the hardest period to manage parkland greens. Deep spiking will be carried out on 22 and 23 October.

The disease pressure was extremely high during the first week of September, resulting in outbreaks of fusarium patches on the greens. The high humidity and leaf wetness made for the perfect conditions for the disease to spread, predominantly attacking the annual meadow grass (poa). To combat this, the team has over-seeded the greens with creeping bentgrass, which has a much higher disease tolerance. This process will be repeated in October as we look to increase the population of bent grasses across all of the greens, an industry trend as the strength and number of fungicides available to us is reducing each year.

Ahead of the leaves falling, the team will prepare the course for winter by raising the cutting heights and reducing the cutting frequency. All playing surfaces will be fertilized and aerated to keep them healthy and free-draining.

We were very pleased to launch the first of our monthly Carvery lunches and despite the very short notice, which I know kept quite a few of us away, we still had close to 40 people enjoying lunch in the main dining room. It was especially pleasing to whole family groups in attendance as well and there are some pictures below:

All other communication re. Hospitality will be incorporated into the new 19 th Hole Newsletter which we will issue roughly every couple of months.
