From the Captain

Around 400 of you attended Luke Donald's master class, and we raised several thousand pounds for the Captains' charities.  Thank you to everyone who contributed to a tremendous day.

You can relive the fun through Sue Davies’ excellent photos - many thanks Sue - Please click here to view.....

If you would like a high-definition copy of any of the photos, please contact the Office. There will be a small charge which will go to charity.

Thanks also to Bronwyn Collins and her team for the beautiful plants around the Clubhouse, and to Jeremy Ellis’ family – Rick and Zac – who are producing a video of the day which will be available shortly.

The Ladies Club Championship was a great duel between Carole Weir and Emma Hargreaves. See Mandy's report below to find out who won.

I am looking forward to my Captain’s Day on Saturday 10th June, and in particular challenging you all to closest the hole on the 11th for my charity, The Family Holiday Association.  Remember there is a barbeque afterwards, from 4.30pm, to which you and your families are all welcome.

I notice that our driving range and newly opened Luke Donald Short Game Area (see photo) are frequently very busy. That’s fantastic. I hope your game is improving, as there is still plenty of the season to go for you to challenge for trophies.

From the Ladies' Captain

The highlight, in May, for many of us, was Luke Donald's visit. Our huge thanks go to Tim, his planning was meticulous and his master of ceremony skills on the day suggest a future career as a sports commentator! Luke was the most  delightful, charming and modest man. We were so fortunate that he took the time to visit us.

On June 1st we held our Club Championship and Millennium Trophy. After thirty six holes of excellent golf in glorious warm sunshine on a perfect course Carole Weir and Emma Hargreaves were tied for first place. They then played a sudden death playoff for the Championship which Carol won on the second hole. Carol also won the net Millennium trophy.

On Sunday June 4th our Bucks Shield team will play away to Chartridge. The home fixture will be on Wednesday 21st June. Supporters are welcome that day.

From The Junior Section

Our juniors have started the season well, and some have reduced their handicaps considerably. Congratulations to the following:-

Spencer Pearson (Junior Captain) who won 3 Clubs & putter with 41 points   (H/C 7.0 to 6.4)

Ben Quick won the Spring Meeting (Grange Cup) with a nett 69   (H/C 6.7 to 5.9)

James Casserly won the Monthly Medal & Kelly Salver with a nett 66   (H/C 9.0 to 7.8)

Will Liddiard won 3 junior stableford competitions in April   (H/C 21.8 to 18.3).

Four juniors have made it through to the ‘knock-out’ stage of The Secretary’s Putter – Ben Quick, Kian Bains, Will Liddiard and Tom Bell, so we wish them well!

What a great day it was when Luke Donald returned to Beaconsfield and demonstrated his skills in a spectacular Master Class. Our junior golfers were ‘buzzing’ with excitement and Luke spent a great deal of time signing autographs and having ‘selfies’ with them.

The Captain organised a very successful day and invited a few juniors to help that morning: - Spencer Pearson our Junior Captain, was asked to caddie for Luke and James Casserly was invited to have a bunker lesson with Luke at the 18th. I asked both of them to write a few words about their experience on the day:-

“Meeting Luke in the car park, you could immediately tell he felt at home coming back to Beaconsfield golf club. After he toured the building he made his way to the first tee where he was met by a roar of applause. Luke then showed a variety of shots ranging from 140 yards to his full driving distance, each one going precisely the distance required.

Next he went to the 18th hole and hit some shots from 60 to 100 yards out. It impressed me, as it did everyone else, that he managed to hit every shot as close as he did, especially with the difficult sloped green. Luke, being no.1 in the world out of bunkers, he gave a short bunker lesson to James Casserly and Gemma Dryburgh. Rather amusingly, James managed to hit it closer than Luke’s shot on his first attempt, but Luke showed him how it was done, consistently hitting balls within a few feet from the hole. Overall it was a day to remember, personally I have gained many ideas to try out and I’m sure everyone else did as well.”  (Spencer Pearson – Junior Captain)

“I wasn't too sure what to think when I addressed the ball in the bunker. I know the people opposite me were ready to catch the ball as it went flying past the flag but Luke told me to imagine I was on the practice ground, so that's what I did. I just swung the club, half expecting to thin it and hit someone right between the eyes. I don't know what happened when I hit it but it ended up rolling to about 1 foot!!

Luke is a very nice person, who then taught me a better bunker technique which I am honored to have been taught, especially from Luke himself. Overall, the experience was fantastic and one that I'm sure to remember for the rest of my life, even if I can't hit a good bunker shot ever again!!” (James Casserly)

It was a real surprise and an honour, when Tim invited me up to meet Luke after he unveiled his ‘Plaque’ to commemorate our new ‘short game area’. The last time I met Luke personally, was in December 1999, when he was awarded Honorary Membership of Beaconsfield. This was shortly before he turned Professional and during the evening, The Walker Cup was on display in the dining room. Luke had played in two successful Great Britain & Ireland teams, in this amateur equivalent of The Ryder Cup.
