From the Captain

Congratulations to Phil Kilgour, our new Club Champion. Nice scoring, with 72-71 on an immaculate course and a fine day. It’s Phil’s first Club Championship, with potentially many more to come. The winning margin was a clear 4 shots, with old hand Mike Sanders 2nd on 147, and Mark Drummond and Andrew Jackson tied 3rd on 149.

Thanks also to everyone who took part in my Captain’s Day last month. We were lucky with the weather, and a beautiful sunny day saw Neil Osbourne victorious with 41pts. Twenty-eight players, or approximately 1 in 6 who took part, beat me on the closest to the pin on the 11th, costing me a few dozen Pro V1s! Special thanks to everyone for the nearly £3000 we raised for my charity, the Family Holiday Association.

We are now in the heat of the season, and all those practice drills you have worked on in the preceding months should be helping your game. Short game practise is a particular pleasure. I see so many people out there working on their chipping, bunker play and putting, perhaps basking in the shadow of Luke Donald, but also enjoying the magnificent short game facilities we now have. Hopefully all your scores are improving too.

The next big fixture is The Open. Hopefully we'll have a home winner this year!

From the Ladies' Captain

I cannot believe that June is over already! How time flies when we are busy and the sun shines!

Our two scratch teams, bronze and silver, have both been successful and have a good chance of winning their respective divisions. Our Bucks Shield team was very narrowly defeated 71/2 to 61/2 by a strong team from Chartridge.

My Ladies’ Captain’s Day had to be postponed, it will now be on July 13th. The Senior Ladies Luncheon and Putting competition was well attended and enjoyed by all.

On June 29th we held our first invitation day of the year. There were ninety-two ladies playing, we had dry weather, good golf and an excellent lunch. One of the highlights for most people was the wonderful temporary Land Art installation on the course that day. This was the idea of Lynda Cornwall. Her inspiration came from the Land Art artists such as Richard Long and Andy Goldsworthy. They turned their backs on galleries and the production of art in studios. Instead, they worked outside,e ngaging directly with the landscape.

Lynda came to me with the idea early in the year and did a brilliant job seeing her idea right through to fruition. She was helped by a small but dedicated group of ladies who came up with wonderful works of art which were placed at strategic locations all round the course. Some examples of the art are shown below.

The ladies are looking forward to a summer of good golf, particularly to our matches with the seniors and the juniors. We hope that lots of ladies, including our newer members will sign up for these.

In the Golf Bag..... Clause 19 (Nett Double Bogey)

Imagine the scenario:  You are playing in the monthly medal and after 10 holes are 5 under handicap, when on the 11th you hook three tee shots onto the railway, hit your next tee shot into the pit, play a wrong ball in the pit and don’t find your ball.  If you go back to the tee, you would be playing 11 (including the penalty), so any hope of doing well in the medal is a distant memory.

In the interest of your own sanity and to keeping play moving, your best option is to No Return on the 11th.  You will be out of the medal, but you should carry on and complete the rest of the round and complete your scorecard as normal, just with no score on the 11th.

However, all is not lost as far as your handicap is concerned:  Clause 19 reduces all scores in a medal to a maximum of a nett double bogey (just the same as a blob in a stableford).  For calculation of any handicap changes, the system will allocate you a score of 5, 6 or 7 (depending on your handicap) for the 11th, so it is still possible to cut your handicap even with an NR in a medal.

Green Fee Vouchers 2017-18

It has been agreed that some changes are to be made to the period of use of the green fee vouchers, to avoid pressure on the course at the end of October, when people are trying to use up their vouchers and light and weather is becoming a problem.

The current vouchers, which expire at the end of October, are to be extended to the end of December 2017, no further extension will be allowed.

Vouchers for 2017/18 will run from 1st September 2017 to 31st August 2018.

These are now available for purchase, please click here for the form. This is a one off opportunity and applications should be made by the end of August.
